Amde Maingard, a young Mauritian, volunteered for the British Army in 1939, subsequently joining the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and serving as a wartime leader in France. After the war, he returned to Mauritius, becoming instrumental in developing the island's tourism and hotel industry. As founder and first Chairman of Air Mauritius, Maingard became one of his country's most successful postwar businessmen before his death in 1981 at age 62.
