Six Armies in Tennessee

By Steven E. Woodworth

Following Vicksburg's fall in July 1863, the Union's advance into central and eastern Tennessee dramatically altered the Civil War's trans-Appalachian balance. This campaign, fraught with strategic muddle yet illuminated by brilliant generalship and courage, culminated in the bloody Battle of Chickamauga—a costly Confederate victory—and the decisive struggle for Chattanooga. Ultimately, it ended major Confederate presence in Tennessee, setting the stage for the Union's march on Atlanta and the Confederacy's impending collapse in the western theater.
