The Bielski Brothers

By Peter Duffy

In 1941 Belarus, after witnessing their family's murder, brothers Tuvia, Zus, and Asael Bielski launched a desperate fight for survival, forming a Jewish partisan group against the Nazis. Utilizing their intimate knowledge of the dense Belarusian forests, they established a hidden camp, building a thriving community known as "Jerusalem in the Woods" that offered refuge to hundreds of fellow Jews. For over two and a half years, the Bielski partisans protected more than a thousand Jews from the Holocaust, emerging triumphantly from the forests in July 1944.
